SyncFest, San Jose 2001 - Datastick Connection 2.0 software announced by Datastick Systems Inc.
Santa Clara, CA. October 27, 2001 Datastick Systems, Inc. announced the release of Datastick Connection 2.0 data acquisition software for the Palm OS today at SyncFest San Jose 2001. Datastick Connection 2.0 introduces a host of new functionality such as a Gauge View, faster data logging, simplified management of default calibration settings, and greater calibration accuracy.
The new software, which controls the company's Datastick DAS-1206 data acquisition module for Palm OS handhelds, features a new streamlined architecture which allows 50% faster data logging when set to its Maximum Rate setting. The new architecture allows more efficient management of the Datastick hardware attached to a Palm OS handheld computer and eliminates the need for a separate software library for floating-point math calculations.
"We've been listening to our customers and have incorporated their requests," said Steve Sabram, Datastick Systems' President. "Chief among the new features is the new gauge view, which allows users to monitor data input on virtual gauges - literally watching needles swinging around on dials. Gauge View gives the user something very simple and intuitive to look at. Plus, we have a vastly improved numerical readout with user-selectable readout precision from one to five decimal places in all viewing modes."
These improvements add to an already impressive feature set. In addition to the new Gauge View and the improved numeric display, the software allows the user the option of viewing input via real-time bar graphs and real-time line graphs, each of which can be custom formatted.
Datastick Connection software permits user-adjustable sampling intervals between 200 milliseconds and 12 hours. The new version's Maximum Rate setting now allows faster data logging up to an interval of approximately 80 milliseconds.
"Version 2.0 enables measurements to be recorded much faster at the maximum rate; the actual number depends on the specific Palm OS handheld being used. Faster data logging means that this easy-to-use, portable device can be used for more applications than ever before," said Michael D. Scandling, Vice President of Marketing.
Readings can be recorded in databases for later export in standard or comma-separated values (CSV) format for the Palm handheld's own Memo Pad; and in DOC or DOC CSV format for reading with any DOC reader on the Palm handheld, or for HotSync export to a personal computer for later analysis in spreadsheets and statistical packages.
Datastick Connection 2.0 software is bundled with the Datastick DAS-1206 module which retails for $345. Software upgrades for existing users are available from Datastick Systems for $45.
The Datastick Datastick DAS-1206 is compatible with the Palm III series and Palm VlI series. It will also work with a Palm V series with the addition of a third-party connector, and with the discontinued PalmPilot Professional with 2 MB upgrade card. All use Palm OS 3.0 or greater. It can also be used with compatible IBM and HandEra handhelds.
By adding the appropriate sensor, the user can measure physical data such as temperature, pressure, acceleration, light, salinity, gas, etc. Readings from up to different six sensors channels can be measured by a single Datastick DAS-1206.
Datastick Connection 2.0 software also provides a sophisticated instrumentation feature found for the first time on any personal digital assistant (PDA) instrument: it allows users to compensate for a sensor package's nonlinear sensor response curve by custom-editing the sensor-response conversion functions and thus viewing real-world, linear readings.
Users desiring even more sophisticated instrumentation features can purchase Datastick Connection Plus for an added $125; it allows the user to set alarms and thresholds for recording based on input channels.
