Datastick Systems’ Vibration Training Seminar for Predictive Maintenance Makes Learning Vibration Easy

Two-day seminars to be held: Las Vegas in September and Houston in November 2007

August 23, 2007, CAMPBELL, CA —“Vibration is easy when it’s properly taught,” said Derek Norfield, 30-year veteran of machine vibration analysis and balancing and Datastick Systems, Inc., Director of Applications, who announced today that Datastick’s popular two-day Vibration Training Seminar will be held in Las Vegas in September and in Houston in November of 2007

The seminar covers the basics of machine vibration and vibration analysis and best practices in collecting and reporting vibration data, as well as the operation of Datastick® VSA™- series Vibration Spectrum Analyzers. It is designed for anyone interested in getting off to a good start using vibration analysis for predictive maintenance and for users of VSA analyzers.

Seminars will be held in the following locations and dates:

Las Vegas, Nevada — September 14 and 15, 2007 – following PdM-2007, the Predictive Maintenance Technology Conference and Expo

Houston, Texas — November 13 and 14, 2007

“This seminar is designed for newcomers to the subject of machine vibration,” said Mr. Norfield. “Datastick’s Vibration Spectrum Analyzers are reasonably priced and simple to operate, and this attracts people from companies that have wanted to have vibration analysis as part of a predictive maintenance program, but have been put off by cost and complexity. Now that we’ve made it possible for them to afford it, the next question they ask is, 'How do I do it?' The seminar is where we say, 'Here’s how.' We keep things uncomplicated and easy to understand, and we provide lots of hands-on experience.”

A small sample of topics covered in the seminar include:

  • The simple physics of vibration
  • The causes of vibration in rotating machinery
  • Why it’s important to look at both waveforms and spectra in vibration analysis, and what to look for
  • Using Datastick VSA-1214 and VSA-1215 Vibration Spectrum Analyzers
  • How to place sensors to get accurate, repeatable measurements
  • Strategies for collecting data
  • How to produce meaningful reports using Datastick Reporting System™ PC software
  • When to call a consultant for help
  • How to help the consultant help you

“Not only is Derek Norfield a seasoned expert in machine vibration, he’s also a natural teacher,” said Datastick Vice President of Marketing Michael Scandling. “He knows his subject so well that he makes it easy. Many of our attendees even say it’s fun.”

Mr. Norfield’s experience includes heading up his own vibration, balancing and training company with clients including General Electric Engine Overhaul, Chevron Richmond Refinery, Honeywell (Allied Signal), Unaxis Optics, Bayer Chemical, Pella Windows and many other process and manufacturing companies. His employment history includes Reutlinger’s Balancing Equipment division in the U. K. and the American Hofmann Corporation in the U.S. His latest book, Practical Balancing of Rotating Machinery, is published by Elsevier Technical Press.

Mr. Norfield will be assisted by members of Datastick’s technical support staff.
